North County Leadership Exchange

We Go There to Learn About Here.

A regional learning experience that brings business, nonprofit, civic, and public-sector leaders together to examine how other suburban regions are addressing challenges shared by North County.

A Regional Learning Platform

What Is the Leadership Exchange?

Each year, SDNEDC convenes a small delegation of business, nonprofit, civic, education, and public-sector leaders to study a suburban region confronting challenges similar to those facing North County.

This is not a project tour or a search for “best practices” to copy. Every region has its own history, institutions, culture, and opportunities. We use another place as a mirror—to sharpen our questions, test assumptions, deepen relationships, and think more clearly about the region we are responsible for stewarding.

The Exchange Process

How the Leadership Exchange Works

01

Frame the Questions

We begin with North County challenges—workforce, housing, higher education, healthcare, mobility, redevelopment, institutional collaboration, and other issues that cross city and sector boundaries.

02

Design the Learning

Research, advance meetings, speaker preparation, and a detailed briefing book help determine which organizations are relevant, what each visit should reveal, and what questions the delegation should carry into the room.

03

Bring It Home

Delegates reflect together, preserve what they learned, and identify ideas that warrant deeper inquiry, partnership, local experimentation, or action through future Leadership Insights, Leadership Labs, and follow-up work.

Denver 2026

Presented by Southwest Airlines, the second annual North County Leadership Exchange brought together twenty leaders from business, education, nonprofits, economic development, and local government for three days of shared learning across suburban Denver.

The goal was not to return with a single program to copy. It was to examine how another region organizes people and institutions around shared challenges—and to strengthen the relationships North County needs to act regionally.

What Denver Helped Us Examine

Learning That Comes Home

The value of the Exchange is not a list of projects. It is a stronger regional lens—built through better questions, deeper relationships, and practical examples that help North County leaders see local opportunities differently.

Opening Doors for Local Businesses

How can anchor institutions prepare more small and diverse businesses to compete for major procurement opportunities?

Reimagining Commercial Districts

How can aging commercial sites become mixed-use destinations that support housing, walkability, economic activity, and a stronger sense of place?

Connecting Education and Industry

How can schools, colleges, employers, and public partners build clearer pathways into high-opportunity careers?

Strengthening Regional Stewardship

How can leaders build the trust and relationships needed to address challenges that do not stop at city boundaries?
