Hiring and retaining talent continues to be a challenge for businesses in San Diego County. As one small way of addressing this need, SDNEDC partnered with the City of Carlsbad and CSU San Marcos to develop a program to enhance summer internship opportunities and provide discounted intern housing for students in North County.
Along with their partners, SDNEDC marketed on-campus apartments to interns at San Diego County companies. These fully furnished apartments were made available on short-term leases at deeply discounted rates to student interns – whether local, from outside the region, CSUSM students, or enrolled elsewhere.
For the summer of 2024, 23 interns took advantage of the program at 17 different companies:

In addition, the SDNEDC has produced the first of two or three intern meetup events to help interns network with one another, provide professional development opportunities, and encourage them to see North County as a place they can see themselves calling “home” in the future.
The interns in attendance received career advice from Phil Blair, author of “Job Won!” and regional expert on career planning and landing that first job. SDNEDC also provided the interns with tickets to local venues and events to help them discover North County’s excellent quality of life.
