1. MARKET THE REGION
SDNEDC will market economic development opportunities and amplify positive news about the North County economy.
In 2024, we will:
- Directly assist at least 6 companies interested in establishing a new presence in North County
- Re-launch “Why North County” LinkedIn attraction campaign with updated landing page
- Increase social media engagement on all platforms
- Facilitate at least 12 positive news articles about the North County Economy in regional news publications or outlets
- Promote positive business news in weekly e-newsletters and quarterly small business resource newsletters

2. RETAIN EMPLOYMENT
SDNEDC will help existing North County employers grow by helping them solve specific business challenges.

- Meet with at least 40 existing employers
- Host tri-annual Chairman’s Dinners, bringing together the region’s largest employers
- Share economic development resources with businesses through educational webinars
- Support Innovate78 efforts across the SR-78 corridor

3. CONNECTING EMPLOYERS & EDUCATORS
SDNEDC will connect K-16 educators and employers through events and individual meetings to strengthen workforce programs throughout North County.
In 2024, we will:
- Assume more leadership for Student Opportunities for Career Awareness and Learning (SOCAL) efforts
- Increase use and utility of SOCAL website
- Add 12+ new videos from 3+ new industries to expand the library of occupations
- Attend career fairs to engage students with the resource
- Amplify workforce opportunities from our higher education partners

4. RESEARCH & REPORTS
SDNEDC will conduct research and collect data on the North County industries and clusters that are driving economic prosperity. SDNEDC will also carry out economic forecasts, undertake economic impact reports, and conduct specialized research services for clients and investors.
In 2024, we will:
- Produce at least 40 research reports and briefs
- 9 City Dashboard Fact Sheets (Bi-annually)
- 8 Industry Cluster Fact Sheets (Bi-annually)
- Real Time Labor Data Reports (Quarterly)
- Release the 2024 North County Indicators Report (MAY)
- Acquire IMPLAN and carry out at least 2 economic impact reports

5. EVENTS & ENGAGEMENT
SDNEDC will gain referrals for economic development services and assets and connect North County business leadership with one another through curated events.
In 2024, we will:
- Host the North County Economic Summit, sharing economic trends and how they will impact North County (May 7)
- Host the Excellence in North County Economic Development Awards, celebrating North County economic development achievements (Dec 14)
- Host the North County Spotlight, highlighting successful local entrepreneurs (September)
- Host 3+ Chairman’s Dinners, connecting the region’s largest employers
- Develop “Economic Development 101” series for newly elected officials
- Develop “Multi-Day Study Tour” to learn how another region is addressing some of North County’s biggest issues and opportunities

Chief Executive Officer
Erik is the Chief Executive Officer of the San Diego North Economic Development Council. As CEO, Erik has responsibility for all council operations, including programming, economic development services, and regional economic research and analysis.
Before accepting this position, he was the Chief Economist with the National University System and the President of the National University System Institute for Policy Research. He had responsibility for examining how academic programs throughout the system aligned with workforce needs in the communities the system services. While at National he also was head of a university-affiliated public policy and economic think tank where he oversaw the authorship of more than 100 economic and policy studies focusing on regional economic competitiveness. Topics the institute studied ranged from an examination of the impact of the supply chain of San Diego shipbuilding industry to the economic impact of QUALCOMM to an estimation of the size and economic impact of San Diego’s short-term rental industry.
Before joining the National University System, Erik was Vice President for Public Policy & Research for the San Diego Regional EDC. While at EDC he headed up the organization’s research division while also leading several specific responses to such challenges as the last round of the Defense Base Realignment and Closure process and campaign to pass a ½ cent sales tax to fund vital infrastructure improvements.
He has taught at college level courses in political science, urban economic development, urban planning and international relations. He holds a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Denver and a Masters from the University of California, San Diego. When he isn’t pouring over economic forecasts, he is enjoying biking with his two children and wife in beautiful San Diego.
Caitlyn Canby
Chief Operating Officer
Caitlyn is the Chief Operating Officer of the San Diego North Economic Development Council, bringing 10 years of volunteer and professional marketing and communications experience to the council. As COO, she carries primary responsibility for investor and public relations, marketing, and event coordination.
Caitlyn joined SDNEDC in 2022 as the Marketing & Events Coordinator, where she spearheaded a comprehensive rebranding effort, gaining unanimous approval from a diverse board of over 60 members. As the editor of the PULSE of North County newsletter, Caitlyn has redesigned and scaled the scope of the publication. Included in those efforts is her original content series “Meet North County Stewards,” which features 27 North County business leaders and their organizations.
Throughout her tenure at SDNEDC, Caitlyn has been instrumental in fostering collaboration within the North County business community. She has coordinated high-profile events like the North County Economic Summit presented by Wells Fargo and produced events and economic research projects for Innovate78, a collaborative economic development effort between Carlsbad, Escondido, San Marcos, Vista, and Oceanside.
Prior to employment with the SDNEDC, Caitlyn was the Marketing Director for Kelly Nelson Brown Real Estate, honing her skills in property marketing, content creation, and social media management, contributing to the successful closure of over 46 escrows over 4 years. She also fulfilled the role of Fundraising Chair for Preschool Learning for Avalon Youth, planning events that raised $22,000+ for the school and managing a team of 30+ parents.
Caitlyn grew up in Escondido and now resides in beautiful Fallbrook with her family. In her free time, she loves to read, explore new places, and experience different cultures.
Caitlyn holds a bachelor’s degree in communications, and she is currently sifting through options for earning her MBA.
Katja Hokanson
Marketing and Events Coordinator
Katja is the Marketing and Events Coordinator at the San Diego North Economic Development Council. As the Marketing and Events Coordinator, her responsibilities include marketing and event planning for SDNEDC to initiate business growth and awareness in North County. Her work for the organization includes preparing weekly newsletters, writing blogs, creating and posting social media content, organizing events, conducting business advertising, and more.
Before accepting this position, Katja gained local, national, and even international experience within a variety of industries including hospitality & tourism, non-profits, and e-commerce. In 2022, Katja worked as a facilities intern for Conrad Dublin, where she worked with the engineering team to maintain and improve the hotel’s infrastructure. She contributed to writing Standard Operating Procedures and reports as well as communicating with different hotel departments and outside contractors to instill hotel safety procedures. In her last year of college, she interned as a marketing and events coordinator for the La Jolla Village Merchants Association, where her responsibilities included posting events and writing blogs to promote local businesses and tourism in the La Jolla Shores area.
After graduating from university, Katja gained more tourism experience by interning for a travel agency in Sydney, Australia. Here, she developed sales skills by promoting local trips to travelers and worked with the customer support team to answer customer inquiries. Since then, she gained experience with start-ups, working as a brand ambassador for an e-commerce company in San Diego, where she assisted with digital marketing and sales efforts.
Katja is originally from Los Angeles but moved to San Diego to attend UC San Diego, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a Minor in Business in 2023. Not only does Katja enjoy learning more about San Diego, but she also enjoys traveling, reading, spending time with loved ones, and loves to learn!

Several of these events are limited solely to investors, providing an opportunity to connect in small group settings with the people that make the key decisions about North County.
Referrals, connections, and Red Team membership:
To assist businesses either locating to San Diego North County or expanding in our region, SDNEDC frequently relies upon other North County companies. While we put the interests of these “clients” first, we always first consider the expertise of our current investors when thinking about the resources that will add value.
Increased Visibility:
SDNEDC’s Newsletters reach over 4,000 North County readers each week, and our social media posts are seen by tens of thousands each month. We promote key events that investors want to promote, amplify Investor news, and help increase Investor marketing reach. We also utilize specialized services for different industries, such as our featured commercial property messages for the commercial real estate community.
Research and Business Intelligence:
SDNEDC subscribes to a variety of databases and services – from tracking information about job posts and hiring practices to carrying out economic impact analysis to generating mailing lists for specific North County industries. SDNEDC staff has more than 40 years of combined experience in business intelligence research and marketing. Depending on the level of investment, SDNEDC is often able to assist with your research needs or can point you in the direction of other regional resources.
