San Diego’s defense and aerospace industry has highly concentrated throughout the region. San Diego County has the largest amount of military assets in the world and plays a crucial role in US military operations.
Defense spending, which surged during the pandemic, accounts for ¼ of the Counties gross domestic product (GPD). During the 2020 fiscal year, $33 billion went to people and companies throughout the county, via payroll, defense contracts, and retirement and veterans benefits.
Aerospace has a long-standing history in San Diego. Starting with the Curtiss Aviation Camp for training and development on North Island. In modern times, Lindberg Field is home to San Diego International Airport which is the busiest single-runway commercial service airport in the nation.
